Thymoquinone

Specific molecules

The active principle of the nigella seed, the “black seed” of ancient medicines.

Two catalog entries carry it: the seed and its oil.

Effects and benefits

The black seed of nigella, found in Egyptian tombs, has been tested in many modern trials: as powder or oil, it slightly lowered blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.

Nigella has accompanied the cuisines of the Middle East and India for millennia; some was found in Tutankhamun's tomb. Its flagship molecule, thymoquinone, is a powerful antioxidant in the laboratory.

Meta-analyses of trials found a slight drop in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides with 1 to 3 g of seed or oil a day (Sahebkar et al., 2016).

The concentrated oil, as a supplement, should be taken with caution during pregnancy, for lack of data.
